If you have some left over candles, or candles that you don’t intend to use, it might be a good idea to turn them into something creative – like wax art. Making candle wax art is a fun activity for kids of all ages. This will also make a great gift for your friends and family. Don’t worry if you don’t have any candles on hand, you can buy some candles at a dollar store. So go grab your candles and let’s start making candle wax art!
What you need:
- old candles, birthday candles, any colored candles that you can find
- clear jars
First thing you need to do is gather your candles, any colored candles that you can find and separate them each by color. You can also use birthday candles, any candles as long as they are colored all through their core.
Next is grating. Once you’ve separated your candles by color, go ahead and grate them using a grater (you may want to ask an adult to help you out). You want your candles to be grated like a powder for best results. You can also leave some candles chunky if you want, since some candle wax art can also look nice with chunky bits. You can use a knife for chopping (again, adult supervision is required). Once you’ve grated and chopped all your candles, go ahead and lock them up in a zip lock bags by color.
Now since you’ve separated you candles by color, look for some clear jars that have a wide opening like jelly jars. The important thing is the jars should have a wide opening, wide enough so that the rim of the jar is not going to touch the wick. You can also use a big jar if you want if you want to be more creative.
Now here’s the fun part. Layer different colors of the grated candles/wax into the jar. You can tilt the jar so you can mix the colors like the wavy kind of mix. You can also press some wax into shapes and stick those inside the jar, then fill it with grated wax to make it stand out. After mixing and pressing your candle wax, go ahead and make a tiny hole at the center of the wax using a toothpick. After that, slide your wick into the hole. You can also press down some candle wax to make it firmer and ta-da! Your very own candle wax art!
